Whenever I encounter a new word in a podcast or something I am reading I write it down, look it up, and record the definition. Sometime later, I batch and publish here.
asthenosphere - upper layer of the earth's mantle, below the lithosphere.
theorbo - large lute with the neck extended to carry several long bass strings.
ecotone - region of transition between two biological communities.
omasum - muscular third stomach of a ruminant animal, between the reticulum and the abomasum.
abomasum - fourth stomach of a ruminant, which receives food from the omasum and passes it to the small intestine.
dicronite (TM) - tungsten disulfide (WS2) dry film lubricant.
exaptation - when evolution re-uses an existing system for a new function without “starting from scratch”.
pyroptosis - highly inflammatory form of lytic programmed cell death.
alicyclic - denoting organic compounds which combine cyclic structure with aliphatic properties.
aliphatic - denoting organic compounds in which carbon atoms form open chains.
holobiont - assemblage of a host and the many other species living in or around it.
phyllosphere - above-ground surface of plants, viewed as a habitat for microorganisms.
anamnestic - art of recollection or reminiscence.
orexigenic - causes hunger
heterotypic - of a different type or form.
translocon - (aka translocation channel) complex of proteins associated with the translocation of polypeptides across membranes.
reticulum - fine network or netlike structure.
filiform - threadlike
sarcoplasm - cytoplasm of muscle cells.
detritivore - any animal which feeds on dead organic material, especially plant detritus.
circumferentor - surveyors compass used to measure horizontal angles.
cosmogony - branch of science that deals with the origin of the universe, especially the solar system.
propity - integrity, honesty, decency, rectitude.
pergola - outdoor garden feature forming a shaded area w/posts or pillars that usually support cross-beams.
lido - public open-air swimming pool or beach.
pomace - pulpy substance remaining after plant matter is pressed to extract juice or oil.
meristem - region of actively growing and dividing cells in the root tips of plants.
cyclosis - flow or streaming of cytoplasm in the cell, controlled by the cytoskeleton.
thykaloid - membrane-bound compartments inside chloroplasts and cyanobacteria where photosynthesis occurs.
plastid - membrane-bound organelle found in plant cells and algae. Examples include chloroplasts and chromoplasts.
channelopathy - inherited disease caused by a mutation in the genes that code for ion channel subunits or the proteins that regulate them.
domiciliary - concerned with or happening in someone’s home.
sesquilinear - (of a map of a complex vector space) Linear in one coordinate and conjugate linear in the other.
donnybrook - scene of uproar.
hypercatecholaminergic - excessively dopaminergic.
peroration - concluding part of a speech, typically intended to inspire enthusiasm in the audience.
malvertising - practice of incorporating malware in online advertisements.
insouciance - nonchalance. lack of concern.
enfleurage - extraction of essential oils and perfumes from flowers using odorless animal or vegetable fats.
intussusception - infolding of one part of the intestine into another, or assimilation of new substances into the existing living tissue.
scutching - to dress fibrous material by beating it.
retting - using micro-organisms to dissolve or rot away much of the cellular tissue in plants to separate the fibre from the stem.
mook - a stupid or incompetent person.
heckling - preparing flax for spinning.
acme - peak, zenith, prime, or most perfect.
fid - conical tool made of wood or bone used to work with rope and canvas in marlinespike seamanship.
neologism - new word, expression, or usage.
jenny - female donkey or ass.
mule - slipper or shoe without the back, or hybrid plant or animal usually sterile, or type of yarn spinning machine.
